What a game this one was, one of my all time away day favourites. York were doing well near the top of the old division 3 but were rocked by manager John Ward's departure to Bristol Rovers. In the lead up to this match City had appointed Alan Little to be the new manager, a descision that had gone down well with the supporters. It was a warm and sunny spring day down in Barnet, that greeted over 500 hundred travelling City fans. I had travelled down by mini bus and there was an air of uncertainty after the changes that had happened at the club. Pre match drinks were had in the pub at the corner of the ground and the faithful were in good voice all through the build up. I remember a group of Northampton Town fans in team shirts with one lad in tow wearing a York Shirt coming to the game. It turned out that the lad in a York shirt was a Northampton fan but had a soft spot for York and brought his friends down for the game.
City took to the field wearing the white away shirts that day, one of my favourite away shirts that York City have worn. The game was a blur as goal after goal went into the Barnet net. Barnet were right up there with York that season and had gone something like 18 months without losing at home, a round record that was shattered that day. I remember it was packed on the terraces and every goal that was scored the City fans went proper mental and you ended up 20 yards from where you started. Paul Barnes got a hatrick, Ian Blackstone got one and one was an own goal.
The celebrations at the end of the game were immense, and I remember Paul Stancliffe and Alan Little hugging each other with beaming smiles on their faces.
That season of course we ended up at Wembley and the rest in History. Barnet were also promoted finishing 3rd just one place above City. If I had a top 10 games off all time then this one would be in it for sure.
I think you can see the highlights of this game on YouTube. It's well worth checking out.
