It's the time of the year that for all York City fans that the phoney war is about to begin, I am talking about pre season. Over the years of watching York City you go through many of these and to be fair for a lot of our campaigns the pre season has been the highlight. The Press feeds us all the things we want to hear about our new signings. They make out everyone of them is going to be the best player ever for York City and then 75% of them go on to be pretty rubbish. As fans though we lap up this propaganda. They tell us what we want to hear. No matter how last season ended you just know that with what goes on in the summer must mean we will be better next season, that is until the start of November when our last chance of salvaging anything from the season has just gone south after been knocked out of the first round of the FA Cup. As for the games in the past we have played some very obscure non league sides but that means the ground hopping York City fans love to tick of another rare gem of a ground. For many of us we get a chance to see a couple of bigger teams that we have no other chance of playing against. When you go to these games I find them very surreal. The games are devoid of passion and energy from both players and fans. Yes you get a chance to see our new signings and you go away thinking we have a couple of real finds and how could their last clubs have been stupid enough to let them go. 3 games into the season it becomes very apparent why they were let go because they are total rubbish. I was at this point going to list a few but there have been oh so many that I would be here all day! Another thing about pre season games is wasps. There is no place for the blighters in the game. Sat in the Pop Stand you can spend an entire half fighting of repeated dive bomb attacks from the wasp Luftwaffe. Pre season does give the casuals a chance to show off new T shirts, polo shirts, short sleeve shirts and shorts. A look that only has a very small window of weather oppertunity. I may wear my new Cliffe Minstermen Polo shirt if they ever turn up!!!!!!
After saying all that after last season there really is a sense of optimism surrounding York City FC. Nigel Worthington has gone about his recruitment in a very proffesional manner in the off season and as I write this we are only waiting for one maybe two players. The pre season programme gives us pretty much everything that fans want. A trip to Scotland, a couple of teams we don't come against at home, and a premier league team who are in Europe this season (and god help Europe).
So from everyone at the Cliffe Minstermen we would like to wish all our fellow York City fans and friends a very happy pre season.
