The Cliffe Minstermen are really looking forward to the first pre season game today.
Sheffield Wednesday is a team that has not crossed paths with York City in my time of watching city. However we came close back in 1990/91 to playing the owls.
Having dispatched Darlington in the first round of the FA Cup, City were drawn away to Mansfield in the 2nd round. The game was postponed due to very h in fact it was on the same day that BBC commentator John Motson famously was seen in his trademark sheepskin coat doing a piece in front of camera in a blizzard at Wycombe. This meant that the draw for the third round was made before we had played our 2nd round match. Sheffield Wednesday v Mansfield Town or York City. I remember getting very excited at a chance to see City play away at a big club. In anticipation of a trip to Wednesday in the cup I thought it may bee a good idea to checkout the opposition and see what we may be up against. On a very cold December day I saw Wednesday against Ipswich, the difference being Trever Francis who scored a gem of a goal that I think was Yorkshire TVs goal of the season. In Ron Atkinsons programme notes he alluded to the Cup draw and it was great to see York City's name sit proudly on the page. I should have know that was the nearest to Wednesday we would get as we lost the Mansfield game on a really cold and murky night on the December the 17th 1990. The game ended 2-1 with our consolation goal coming from Nigel Pepper.
